Workers from Australian salmon producers Petuna Aquaculture, Huon Aquaculture and Tassal helped rescue 111 of 470 pilot whales washed up on sand spits in the waters around Macquarie Heads on Tasmania's west coast.

The companies provided cargo nets, boats, heavy work vessels, several strops and farm workers to assist in the operation.

While the immediate rescue is now over, the companies are still involved in helping to haul more than 350 dead whales back out to sea, a "mammoth and traumatic task," according to a Petuna spokesperson.
