Fish health and RAS
Brian Vinci of the Freshwater Institute said CTRLAQUA has developed indicators to make sure fish have the highest welfare.
“With RAS, you can control the environment, that’s the benefit. You can provide the environment specific to the fish,” he said. “When people throw rocks at RAS, they’re throwing rocks at the density issue.”
The fish are in higher-density environments than in netpens.
He pointed to raising Atlantic charr in land-based systems versus netpens, and noted the fish were sometimes happier in the RAS versus other systems.
