Russia’s wild salmon season is in full swing but producers are struggling with poor catches and burdened with millions in costs associated with COVID-19 preventative measures.
As of July 20, the total wild salmon harvest across all of the country’s far eastern fishing areas slightly exceeded 37,000 metric tons.
This is just 45 percent of the amount caught in the same period of 2018 when the industry enjoyed a record-breaking season, according to the Russia's federal fishery agency, Rosrybolovstvo.
