Norwegian farmed salmon prices bottom out

Prices for Norwegian fresh salmon are still at low levels and even close to production costs for most fish farmers.

Although prices are low they are also stable.

Norwegian farmed salmon prices look like they might have bottomed out heading into next week, as although prices are low they are also stable, industry players told IntraFish.
A Danish buyer told IntraFish of the following prices, delivered to southern Denmark:
  • Sizes 3-4 kilograms -- €4.15 ($4.80) per kilo
  • Sizes 4-5 kilograms -- €4.45 ($5.20) per kilo
  • Sizes 5-6 kilograms -- €4.75 ($5.50) per kilo

“This morning, people thought that prices would go up, but it seems that they are stable and have found a bottom," said the buyer. "They are marginally up from last Friday."

A Norwegian producer, meanwhile, also reported stable, low prices, in the range of NOK 40 (€3.70/$4.30) per kilogram.

"It is very difficult to say if prices have reached the bottom, but the level is low now," he said. "The positive news is that the currency is advantageous."

A European buyer is reporting a calm summer market, and is also seeing prices around the NOK 40 (€3.70/$4.30) per kilo mark.

"It is summer so it is quiet and there is less activity," he said.

Another European buyer confirms that little trade has been done so far.

"We hear talk of prices of €4.30 ($5) to €4.60 ($5.30) and even €4.90 ($5.70) per kilo for the different weight classes 3-6 kilos," he told IntraFish.
