The idea that the Norwegian salmon sector could increase production five-fold by 2050 is often a talking point among Norwegian politicians and industry members.

But Kjetil Hestad, the head of the Norwegian Seafood Association, told IntraFish such a scenario "is unrealistic".

That 2050 vision of increasing Norway's salmon production is based on a perspective analysis from 2012. It is called "Value creation based on productive seas 2050," and was presented by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Technology (NTVA) and the Royal Norwegian Science Society (DKNVS), together with the research group Sintef.
