A second non-Alaskan seafood worker has tested positive for COVID-19 in the Bristol Bay city of Dillingham. The worker, a processing equipment technician, is employed by an unnamed company.
The region -- home of the world's most valuable wild salmon fishery -- will begin getting an increasing influx of season workers for the seafood industry in the coming weeks as preparation for the season begins.
Typically, the first fishing openings begin at the end of the month, with harvests hitting their peak in early July.
The worker, who was in the town in preparation for the upcoming wild salmon season, was under mandated quarantine since May 1 at a Trident Seafoods facility, as per requirements of the City of Dillingham.
The worker tested positive for COVID-19 at the end of his 14-day quarantine period. Other workers sharing the facility tested negative.
In total, 10 cases of COVID-19 linked to the seafood industry have been reported in the state of Alaska, including a worker in Bristol Bay employed by Trident Seafoods, and an employee of Ocean Beauty Seafoods in Cordova.
