Line Ellingsen remembers well that Sunday morning in May a year ago when she received a call from a colleague. The message was that toxic algae were suspected in the area. One week later, the Ellingsen Seafood's salmon, farmed in Lofoten, Norway, also began to rise to the surface.

Ellingson, who is the company's CEO, told IntraFish it lost 700,000 salmon that were close to harvest from the algal event, and 200,000 smolt also died.
