Norwegian salmon farmers Tombre Fiskeanlegg, Lingalaks, Austevoll Melaks, and Eidesvik Laks are teaming up to build a processing boat for hauling and transporting fish produced by the group.

In total, the group – known collectively as Samlaks -- produces around 40,000 metric tons of salmon a year, and the boat is designed to handle the entire harvest volume. It will also have the capacity to take on external assignments.

The new build is designed and developed in collaboration with Maritime Engineering and shipping company Artic Group.

It will be built at Astilleros Balenciaga in San Sebastian, Spain, and will have a load capacity of 600 m3.

The factory and processing equipment on board will be supplied by Stranda Prolog in Kristiansund and Optimar in Valderoy.

The boat will have six lines, and the factory and equipment are designed for a slaughter capacity of around 120 metric tons of salmon per hour.

“When we designed the boat, we thought about sustainability, and focused on having as little environmental footprint as possible,” said Ingar Fiskerstrand, chairman of Samlaks.

He added the boat will contribute to reduced air emissions, in addition to less waste, improved fish welfare and reduced contagion risk by slaughtering the fish at the cage edge and in completely closed transport.
