Norwegian pelagic company Pelagia is researching the best way to automatically remove pinbones from mackerel -- a key factor in making processing more efficient and opening up the fish to new product forms.
While Asia uses cheap labor to manually remove the pinbones from mackerel, the process needs to be automated in a high-cost country such as Norway.
The project will run over the next two years with the help of research firm Moreforsking and equipment suppliers Marel and Baader.
