Einar Wathne: 'We don't need to build technical monsters to become sustainable'

Einar Wathne, the former president of feed giant Cargill Aqua Nutrition, said the salmon farming industry should focus on return on technology rather than just return on capital.

This comes after consulting firm Ernst&Young reported a decline in the salmon farming industry's return on capital.

"The rescue is that we have very good prices," Wathne told IntraFish. "However, if we continue to develop technology, we must increase the return on technology."

Today's cage systems could be developed for increased sustainability, Wathne, who is now chairman of the board of NCE Seafood, said.
