Organic byproducts from the production of one kilo of salmon contain enough nutrients to produce seven kilos of lettuce, according to new findings from Norwegian research group Sintef, a finding that could encourage the Norwegian salmon sector to embrace aquaponics.

Sintef Business Developer Oyvind Hilmarsen, who leads a project investigating the potential for aquaponic production in Norwegian farms, said his work highlights the need to shift thinking away from salmon farm effluent as a resource -- not waste.
