Vertically integrated, stock-listed French tuna giant Sapmer has redoubled efforts on social responsibility, with a new project incorporating artificial intelligence into vessel monitoring.

The company, which operates nine purse-seine vessels and a dedicated tuna processing plant in Mauritius, is partnering with US-based environmental organization The Nature Conservancy and the Seychelles authorities to install the tracking systems, which the company says will complement the work onboard observers do.

Though observers are on all of Samper's vessels, the new system can help the group "go further" with traceability, Sapmer Sustainability Director Laurent Pinault told IntraFish.
