Nissui-backed Australian firm Seafarms' Project Sea Dragon shrimp farm is closer a step closer to completion, following the building of a bio-security facility in Exmouth.
The construction of the broodstock maturation center and core breeding facilities is also underway.
The stocking center is part of the project's bio-security strategy to test for specific pathogens known to cause diseases in shrimp.
Seafarms has produced 19 second-generation shrimp free of specific pathogens (SPF) since kicking off in September 2016, with the third generation expected by the end of this year.
Once the shrimp are proven to be completely SPF, the company will move them to the commercial breeding facilities, with the goal to identify the genetic performance of a shrimp with a DNA test.
The full project will involve construction of about 10,000 hectares of ponds and about 15,000 metric tons of shrimp per year.
Shrimp group Seafarms' share purchase plan closed on May 22 raising more than $4.4 million (€3.9 million).
