Although Chile took the entire growth in the Chinese salmon market last year, it also pushed up demand as well, setting the table nicely for Norway to take advantage this year, according to Kolbjorn Giskeodegaard, senior seafood analyst at Nordea Markets.

In 2018, Chile increased salmon production by 115,000 metric tons -- 90,000 metric tons more than the salmon industry expected.

This was driven by the fact that Chilean farmers had a larger biomass, higher average weights and some early harvests that normally would have been harvested in the first half of this year, according to the analyst.
