Mitsui-owned FRD Japan has ambitious plans for land-based salmonid farming in the country, imagining a future where RAS farms are situated within distribution centers of large supermarket chains.

“We are talking to retail stores about this concept right now,” Tetsu Sogo, chief operating officer at FRD Japan, told IntraFish. “It would be the utmost reduction of distribution chains.”

Having a plant in a retailer’s distribution center would reduce distribution costs to virtually nil, plus significantly increase freshness, as harvesting would only happen once “we get the order from the stores.”
