Iceland’s Atlantic farmed salmon industry produced 11,265 metric tons last year. While growth expectations have slowed since an initial flurry of excitement, industry members continue to predict a “bright future” for the sector.

“It’s an industry with huge potential,” Kristjan Davidsson, managing director of the Iceland Aquaculture Association, told IntraFish. “But we’re still in the process of building it.”

Iceland’s overall aquaculture exports will reach around 20,000 metric tons this year, he said, including around 5,000 metric tons of trout and other farmed species.
