Land-based salmon production poses a formidable challenge to those venturing down that road. There are few success stories.

New technology -- partly employed in connection with the construction of a number of facilities for large smolt production -- is contributing to reducing this risk.

Nonetheless, banks are not especially motivated to finance land-based fish farming entrepreneurs.

“It is important to prove to [the bank] that one has been successful in achieving a fish production cycle before ordinary financing can be counted on if the plan is to have 'stand-alone' financing on such a facility," Anne Hvistendahl, head of foods and seafood at DNB, told IntraFish.
