Norwegian salmon processor SalmoSea is closing its harvesting facility in Flerengstrand in central Norway.

A major upgrade was completed at the SalmoSea site a couple of years ago, but to keep the company competitive, an investment of approximately NOK 250 million (€22 million/$24 million) in further upgrades was needed, according to the board, which said it was unable to do so given the uncertainty caused the Norwegian government's proposed 40 percent ground rent tax on aquaculture.

Details of the tax, that effectively went into effect in January, have not been finalized but are expected to be made public in the coming months and will presumably be retroactive to the start of the year.
