A portion of the black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) grown in Vietnam has been upgraded to a yellow, or Good Alternative, rating in a newly released update from the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch.
Specifically, black tiger shrimp grown in either "extensive" ponds or in "shrimp-mangrove" ponds was previously rated as red, or Avoid, by the NGO, but has now been upgraded to yellow. Extensive ponds yield no more than 500 kilograms per hectare per year, according to Seafood Watch.
Extensive pond systems usually have a lower stocking density and use minimal to no feed or chemicals, Seafood Watch Outreach Manager Cory Nash told IntraFish.
