This biotech startup says it has the solution for building a new freshwater shrimp farming industry: Get rid of all the males

Farmers of freshwater shrimp face a massive challenge: Behavior traits in the male of the species, including territorialism and aggression, mean the shrimp must be stocked at low densities, relegating its economic status to that of a byproduct.

The problem has for years acted as a significant limiter on an industry with the potential to be much bigger.

Farmed economically, freshwater shrimp -- a sought-after product in southeast Asia -- could offer a sustainable alternative, diversifying the global dominance of vannamei, Assaf Shechter, CEO of biotech company Enzootic, told IntraFish.
