When animal breeding company Hendrix Genetics made its foray into the shrimp farming industry five years ago, it wasn't entirely prepared for the contrasts that it would find with salmonid production, a sector it had several decades' experience in building.

"When we came into shrimp we thought 'this industry is full of opportunities, we can fast track this by using our salmon experiences," Hendrix Genetics Director of Operations and Shrimp Dave Danson told IntraFish.

The reality was quite different.

Hendrix works across the swine, poultry, salmonid and shrimp sectors, and while from a genetic viewpoint the breeding technology can be overlapped, in every other aspect -- operationally -- the industries are vastly different, Danson said.
