Russia has a 100,000 metric-ton hole in its salmon market, and few options for filling it

Russian retail prices for Atlantic salmon exceeded RUB 3,000 (€50.56/$50.08) per kilogram in July, three times higher than at the start of the year, as the country struggles with a supply squeeze brought on by Western sanctions.

The price of salmon at retail is now twice as high compared with May, according to Russia’s Fish Alliance, which represents the country’s fish processing and trading companies.

The sharp price hike is being driven by a six-fold decrease in the supply of farmed salmon from the Faroe Islands and Chile.
