An increasing number of salmon farmers around the world are looking at altering the way they transport their fish in a bid to cut carbon emissions.
The trend is being driven by rising airfreight costs and a heightened focus on reducing carbon emissions, Karl Oystein Oyehaug, CFO of land-based salmon farming group Atlantic Sapphire, told IntraFish.
Faroe Islands-based salmon farmer Hiddenfjord decided to stop flying salmon last year, Chile’s Salmones Aysen scrapped airfreighting fresh salmon to the US market in favor of shipping frozen salmon by boat, and some Icelandic salmon companies are sending more fresh salmon via ocean freight to the United States.
