A class action lawsuit filed Thursday in a US federal court alleges leading retail frozen seafood company Gorton's is misleading consumers by claiming the tilapia it sells is produced sustainably.
In the suit, plaintiffs Alan Spindel and Kevin McCarthy allege Nissui-owned Gorton's tilapia products are made from fish "industrially farmed using unsustainable practices that are environmentally destructive and inhumane."
The complaint specifically centers on tilapia it says is sourced from China.
