Container freight rates will remain elevated throughout most of 2022, but shippers can take measures to manage the disruption, according to consulting group McKinsey.

In the short term, shippers from Asia to the US can look for creative alternatives to avoid high spot prices, the consultancy said.

That could mean deferring or cancelling shipments, especially for lower-value goods. It could also involve moving cargoes to less congested ports.

Larger shippers can charter their own ships, “but this does not remove the fundamental challenge of finding available ports," McKinsey said.
