Activists from Animal Rebellion targeted the Marine Stewardship Council's (MSC) headquarters in London on Monday in protest of of the NGO's sustainable fishing labels.

The attack came nearly a year after controversial documentary Seaspiracy aired on Netflix. The documentary, Animal Rebellion said, motivated it to attack the MSC office building.

According to local media, the protestors used fire extinguishers to spray paint the MSC building blood red and held placards that read "MSC – Stop Certifying Destruction" and "Protect the Seas – End Fishing".

The group, an offshoot of Extinction Rebellion, is calling for a halt to all fishing in a bid to end what it claims is the destruction of the world's oceans.

The group, similar to the producers of the Seaspiracy documentary, want people to move towards vegan diets.

Police said three activists were arrested following the action at Marine House, Snow Hill, in London.

Animal Rebellion says it wants the MSC to stop handing out eco-labels to supermarkets and fisheries "that have been proven to contribute to marine destruction" – an issue raised in Seaspiracy last year.

The 2021 film alleged a number of apparent flaws in the labeling scheme, though the documentary was found to have factual errors.

In a statement, the MSC said it was "shocked" that Animal Rebellion targeted the organization.

"Targeting the MSC’s office will do nothing to stop fishing – instead it hurts an organization making a positive difference," the MSC said.

"It is wholly unacceptable that our staff who are working to protect the oceans, should be intimidated in this way," it added.

The MSC noted that while the publicity stunt drew attention, the group's call to end fishing is over-simplistic and fails to acknowledge the importance of fishing in feeding and sustaining billions of people around the world.

"Tackling overfishing is a complex global challenge which MSC has been working on for more than two decades," said the organization.
