Chilean salmon farmer Nova Austral lost around 1.4 million smolt last month in a hatchery accident, the company said Wednesday, yet another blow for the struggling firm.

The company said malfunctioning biofilters led to hydrogen sulfide contamination at the hatchery, and that it is working with a supplier to update equipment and will make the necessary investments to resolve the issue.

In the meantime, engineers are implementing improvements to cleaning procedures.

So far, the company has given no estimate of the cost of the lost smolts nor the scope of the investment for fixing the equipment.
