Norway has been facilitating Russia's fast-growing aquaculture sector by selling large volumes of salmon smolt to the nation.

Over the last seven years, Norway has sold NOK 843 million (€83.6 million/$93 million) worth of smolt to Russia, according to figures obtained by IntraFish from the Norwegian Seafood Council.

This has been happening despite Russia's ban on imports of Norwegian seafood that was established in 2014 following the EU's decision to impose extensive economic sanctions on Russia for the role it played in the ongoing unrest in eastern Ukraine.
