A total of 3,550 metric tons of dead salmon have been cleared from five production sites in Chile's southern Aysen region, according to the country's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca).

Blumar, Salmones Austral, Camanchaca and AquaChile all suffered losses related to algal blooms, while Mowi Chile activated a contingency plan for mass mortality caused by low oxygen levels in the water.

Summer is a nervous time for salmon producers in Chile: higher water temperatures have triggered costly algal bloom incidents in recent years.
