The early start to Chile's algal bloom season is an unwelcome development for salmon farmers in the the South American nation, who have in recent years suffered devastating losses from the phenomenon.

Last week, 3,500 metric tons of salmon lost to algal blooms were removed from sites belonging to Blumar, Salmones Austral, Camanchaca and AquaChile, according to Chile's Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca). Mowi Chile, meanwhile, activated a contingency plan for mass mortality caused by low oxygen levels in the water.
