New labeling laws being introduced by Chinese authorities could result in a complete halt of headed and gutted (H&G) pollock exports from Russia to processors in China next year.

According to an order from China's General Administration of Customs (GTU) that takes effect Jan. 1, exporters will have to label both the outside and the inside of product packaging.

In addition to standard information about the product's manufacturer, the name of the goods, the name of the vessel that harvested the fish and the catch area, the new measure will require registration numbers and addresses of all enterprises related to the exported products, including fishing, processing and transport ships, as well as cold storage warehouse facilities.
