Major companies such as Tyson Foods, Cargill and Maruha Nichiro are backing alternative meat and seafood products, calling them environmentally friendly and healthier alternatives to conventional products. But the evidence for these claims may be lacking, according to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).

To address this, the US environmental nonprofit this month released a new roadmap it says companies can use to ensure cell-cultured foods are safe for the planet and human health, and that growth in this sector is responsible and transparent.
