Peter Pan Seafood Company CEO Rodger May has thrown his company into the controversy surrounding the unusual shipping system used to move frozen seafood from Alaska to the US East Coast, saying that it provides an "unfair competitive advantage" to shippers using the route.
In a filing with an Alaska federal court Friday, May said the availability and shipping capacity of what's known as "coastwise" vessels -- essentially US-operated vessels shipping goods from one US port to another in direct compliance with the Jones Act -- is a "substantial cost factor" in Peter Pan's trade with its pollock suppliers.
