The International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) is recommending a total allowable catch (TAC) for herring in the North Sea, Skagerrak and Kattegat, and eastern English Channel, of 532,183 metric tons for 2022.

This is a 45 percent increase over the advice given for 2021, which was 365,792 metric tons, and almost 50 percent higher than the agreed total allowable catch (TAC) of 356,357 metric tons.

The basis for the 45 percent increase in catch advice is twofold, said ICES.
