The emergence of large, expensive, offshore salmon farming projects will signal the end of the Norwegian aquaculture industry "as we know it," warned Roger Hofseth, CEO of Hofseth International, in a letter to the national Norwegian newspaper, Nationen.

Although 50 percent of the production capacity is today owned by four companies with large foreign ownership, most fish farming companies in Norway are still small and medium-sized companies that form an important part of the local communities where they are located.
