JBS, one of the world's largest meat processors, has made an alternative takeover bid for Australian salmon farmer Huon Aquaculture that all but ensures the company will assume control over the group -- though potentially by a much lower margin than its initial offer.

JBS made the parallel offer after Australian investment heavyweight Tattarang Agrifood -- owned by mining magnate Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest -- increased its stake in Huon Aquaculture to 18.51 percent, with an implicit threat of acquiring more shares if JBS didn't commit to, among other things, improving animal welfare and decreasing fishmeal inclusion in feed.
