Dutch animal nutrition giant Nutreco has acquired a 12.5 percent stake in Blar – the company formerly known as Roxel Aqua -- which is developing an offshore aquaculture concept based on use of traditional oil rigs.

Norway’s Ministry of Trade and Industry approved development permits for Blar’s “octopus” offshore salmon farming concept in March following an appeal by the company, giving it a second shot at proving the concept is innovative.

The "octopus" consists of a modified offshore rig with 12-14 tension-anchored submersible cages.
