Norway’s inshore cod fishery will lose its Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification in August, the MSC confirmed on June 29, leaving roughly 264,000 metric tons of cod without the sustainability label.
The move was supposed to happen to both the inshore cod and haddock fisheries on April 26, but the cod component was afforded a slight reprieve.
The affected catches -- those taking place within Norway’s inshore 12-mile zone -- make up a massive volume of the overall catch in the country, and will cause a ripple effect across the global whitefish sector.
