The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) -- a group accounting for 40 percent of the world's salmon farming production -- expects to reach its target for all 800,000 metric tons of salmon produced by members to be certified to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standard within two years.

By mid-May this year, according to the GSI's recently released sustainability report, 408,722 metric tons was certified as ASC compliant, although figures change on a rolling monthly basis.

When it was founded in 2013, GSI announced a goal of having all its member producers' volumes certified by 2020 but delays caused by obtaining resources to be become certified and reviews of elements of the standard have held up the process, GSI CEO Sophie Ryan said.
