"The damage is more serious than we expected," said Cheng Ming-yuan, chief of the county's Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau.

Cobia, one of the most important species reared in the county because of its high economic value, suffered the most severe damage, Cheng said.

While the dead fish can still be eaten, the bureau has been in contact with the frozen seafood industry to have the dead fish quickly frozen and sent to Taiwan proper for further processing, Cheng said.
