In February, Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket chain, announced it was closing the remaining 279 fresh fish counters operating in its stores.

The group already closed a swath of counters in 2019 as part of a £1.5 billion (€1.7 billion/$1.8 billion) cost-cutting effort. And last year, the company announced the closure of a further 317 counters across the country where demand was lowest.

The move sparked debate about the health and viability of fresh seafood departments in US supermarkets.
