Nippon Suisan Kaisha, one of the world's largest seafood companies, will officially change its trading name to the more commonly used Nissui, the company announced Friday.

Nippon Suisan Kaisha, long known affectionately as "Nissui" within the industry and with Japanese consumers, started as a fisheries company in 1911 but since has developed into and international conglomerate, with a huge presence in processed products such as surimi, canned fish, frozen foods and omega-3 refined fish oil for the pharmaceutical industry.

Because of its growth beyond just marine products, the company decided to remove "Suisan," the Japanese word for fishery, from its name, the company said.
