Alaska seafood processor OBI Seafoods has been awarded the majority of an $8 million (€7.4 million) US Department of Agriculture (USDA) canned pink salmon and frozen salmon fillet contract.

The company was awarded nearly $6.4 million (€5.9 million) to provide the USDA with both canned pink salmon and wild frozen fillets, according to the contract.

Silver Bay Seafoods won the remainder of the canned salmon bid worth nearly $1.7 million (€1.6 million).

The products will be used in the USDA's national school lunch program and other federal food and nutrition assistance programs. Deliveries of the product will be made between Feb. 1 and June 30.

According to USDA data obtained by IntraFish, the value of US seafood used in USDA contracts tripled from 2014 to 2021, when it totaled nearly $152 million (€140 million).

Pollock and salmon continue to account for major purchases heading into 2023.
