Leading French salmon importer Direct Ocean is targeting a 5 percent increase in business in 2020, although this may have to be achieved against the background of flat market conditions.

The Boulogne-sur-Mer company, which imports salmon from Norway, Ireland, Iceland, Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Poland, posted sales of €82 million ($90.2 million) in 2019.

Direct Ocean's salmon operations handled volumes of 13,500 metric tons last year.

How the French market performs this year is likely to depend on a number of external factors not the least of which, in the short-term, is fallout from the Chinese coronavirus outbreak, the company's sales and purchasing executive, Sebastian Roussel, explained.
