Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday the US would delay the implementation of a 25 percent tariff on Mexican goods for one month.

The pause was precipitated by a pledge by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to immediately send 10,000 soldiers to her country’s northern border to prevent drug trafficking.

The move comes days after Trump announced across-the-board tariffs on the country, along with a 25 percent tariff on Canada and a 10 percent tariff on China.

Mexico exported over $680 million worth of seafood to the United States in 2023. Among the exports are several key seafood products, including most importantly wild and farmed shrimp.

In 2023, the country exported 15,428 metric tons of shrimp to the US, worth nearly $215 million. Tuna esports were at just over 20,000 metric tons, worth $147.2 million.
