US land-based shrimp farmer Tru Shrimp on Wednesday said it has appointed US-based manufacturer Hawkins to distribute its product Tru Chitosan to US pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

The chitosan is made from exoskeletons of the company's production of consumer shrimp, it said.

Chitosan is a molecule refined from the shell of shrimp and is used for numerous pharmaceutical and medical applications.

“From the inception of Tru Shrimp, we have pursued the production of chitosan from the shells and peels of our shrimp,” said Michael Ziebell, the company's president and CEO.
