According to data from the Norwegian Seafood Council, Italy was the eighth-largest importer of Norwegian salmon in 2019, bringing in 68,800 metric tons. As much as 92 percent of the salmon consumed in the country, and nearly all salmon in the fresh segment, is Norwegian. But an outbreak of coronavirus has left the Italian market shaken.

"The two northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto are strongly influenced by the outbreak," Trym Gundersen, fishing envoy, told IntraFish. "Schools have been closed in several places, and in some small towns people have been unable to leave.
