This week KFC restaurants in China for the first time began selling plant-based fried chicken supplied by US-based Cargill, raising the possibility the agribusiness giant might be developing plant-based seafood products as well.

Cargill is no stranger to seafood. The company supplies plant-based alternatives to replace fishmeal and oil in aquaculture feed through its relationships with White Dog Labs, Latitude and Calysta.

In February, the company announced its private-label, plant-based patties and ground meat products will start appearing in US supermarkets this month as part of the company’s strategy to expand its protein offerings.
