Brazilian salmon imports rose 24 percent in the first half of 2021 to $291 million (€245 million), the latest official numbers show, but some industry sources caution that rising prices could pose a threat to the growth.

Brazilian processors trade association ABIPESCA attributes the increase in imports to stronger consumption of seafood, which is expected to rise to 12 kilograms per capita in 2021, after languishing in the 9-10 kilograms per capita range for years.

"With the reopening of restaurants it has increased a lot and people have been paying attention to their health," ABIPESCA President Eduardo Lobo told IntraFish.
