Producers of Brazilian native fish species are expected to target consumers away from their traditional northern sales base in 2020.

"The tambaqui sector is starting to process more fish with the aim of selling in the south and southeast,” said Francisco Medeiros, president of aquaculture trade body Peixe BR.

Native species, including tambaqui, pintado and pirarucu, account for 45 percent of Brazilian farmed fish sales, compared to 55 percent for tilapia, which tends to be sold more in Brazil’s south and southeast states where consumer purchasing power is higher.
